CFW Daily

Stretching after class . . .

Hey! You know what we just noticed? There are 25 CrossFit affiliates in CT. 25! It was just a few years ago that there were 6 of us. Now we have 25, with more in the application process. I have no doubt we’ll hit 30 by the end of 2010.

CrossFit is growing rapidly all over the world and that’s good news for everybody. Freedom of choice is fantastic. If you love your affiliate, then stay with it! If you don’t, shop around. Really. Go try other classes, other places. Make sure that where you are is really where you want to be.

And I mean that for CrossFit Watertown members too! I love all of you guys, but you’re like my kids — I want you to go out and see the world! I’ve been to hundreds of CrossFit affiliates and I’m confident that CrossFit Watertown is among the best anywhere, but don’t take my word for it. Find out for yourself. Visit, explore. Enjoy!

(And then, like Dorothy and Toto, if you find there’s no place like home, you’re always welcome here. Just want to make sure ya’ll know it’s cool with us if you look around and compare!)

Clarification: If anybody wants to participate in Barbells for Boobs at CrossFit Watertown, we can host it. But, as it stands right now, the coaches decided they would rather travel to CrossFit New Haven’s event on Oct 9th — and that’s cool too! Again, travel, explore, compare! Every CrossFit affiliate is different. So, if you want to join up with that group, see Jen or Pam for details! Regardless of whether you’re participating, you can always donate to this worthy cause! Just click the link! (And look for www.crossfit.com to be displaying pink accents this month in support of the fight against breast cancer.)

    Bam!!
Hey! I like going to other gyms.. when I vacation I like to hit one and see how they do their thing.. Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes scary!! lol

As far as BfB is concerned I’ll be driving to NH!…Let’s pre-game this bad boy!! Car-pool anyone???

  2. Lisbeth Says:

“Sometimes fun and scary” is our motto, as I recall.

Too bad I’ll be speaking at CrossFit Spotsy in VA on the 9th or I’d carpool with you, K! I love to do “Grace” — and for a good cause? Double win.

    Oh wait, that could be taken as an entendre . . . a double entendre . . . ;)

  3. K Says:

“No-man has hurt me!” that counts as one too, right?? lol

It’s ok — You did her with me for my b-day!!! that gets you extra points lol.. oh look, did it again lol

  4. Lisbeth Says:

Okay, we better stop now or David will be REALLY bummed when he wakes up in the middle of the night and he’s not the first.

  5. K Says:

    hehehehe.. ok lol

  6. David Says:

Ha, I was strong enough to go right back to bed avoiding the iPhone and all of it’s temptations. As for your challenge to explore, I’ve been lucky enough to try a few affiliates, and they’ve all been great. Each had a different vibe. My most memorable was at crossfit Balboa on New Years Day two years ago. First time with weight lifting shoes; John Welborne let me borrow a pair of his. It was really jaw dropping to see him clean the weight on peoples failed back squats.

  7. Lisbeth Says:

Hey David, I forgot to tell you this, but the affiliate in MN that you’ve been visiting e-mailed me and they said you were great and they totally enjoyed you! (Well, I don’t mean like that ;) ) Anyhow, thanks for being a positive representative of CFW! It’s always cool to hear stuff like that!

  8. Rich Says:

With my work travel, I too have had the pleasure of visiting (& wod’ed) at a number of Crossfits (14) from Calif. to New Hampshire to Fl. The most impressive thing I’ve found is the consistency and professionalism and how your welcomed and almost immediately feel like part of their Crossfit family (It also helps when you drop a name or two,Lis or your home gym, CFW). But for me “There’s No Place Like Home, There’s No Place Like Home”

  9. Pamela Says:

Hey CFW! When you register for Barbells for Boobs, select CrossFit New Haven as your gym — that’s how you reserve your spot. Then show up and represent CFW! There will be several heats and all are welcome. If you’ve already registered and selected CFW, just send me an email or FB me and I will pass your name along.

  10. Lady V Says:

Hey Pam, you know I did that!!! put CFW in place of NH..I think I’m all set but just double check for me!?!?!?!? Thanks

  11. Rockstar Says:

For me there is no place like home. Free of all the cattiness, instigation and B.S. that goes on in other globo gyms. One big happy family

  12. David Kirk Says:

@Lis, the folks at CFM were great.

I echo Rich’s post. I haven’t run across any in my travels that have been sketchy. I will say, that I did come into some thinking, do I really want to pay the $20 drop in fee for that WOD…and never came a way disappointed :-) Seacoast Kettlebell was great and got my KBS and all things KB rockin, CF Providence had a really cool vibe, their box was a 70′s bank branch with 70′s architecture, a pull up station (with room for about 20) in the Lobby and shag carpet in some places. What I will say is that even within our own Gym there’s lots of variation, the 6am is differnt from the nooner which is different from the 5pm, etc. It’s fun to mix it up and work with all of our coaches.

@ Rockstar, there’s that stuff at globo gyms? Who knew? I never talked to anyone and they never talked to me…except when I tried doing Oly lifts in the corner when I first discoverd CF and had to drop a couple of times.

  13. K Says:

    1-Jackie makess me laugh…
2-I JUST saw The title of this lol

  14. Lisbeth Says:

Is it just me, or is this photo just begging for more Mikey-head-photoshopping-extravaganza-by-Barry?

  15. Eric Says:

Did anybody else go directly to memories of Hulk Hogan and “Real American” because of the title? Anybody? No? Check 1, check 1.

  16. Brian Says:

I just visited Yankee Crossfit last night. Marnie goes there on the days she works and can’t get to Watertown. They have a nice little facility located in Farmington.

I view Crossfit like compound interest. You start off investing a small amount until you build a base and before you know it your little base starts to build really fast. Just look at the noon class lately in Watertown. We have more people attending class than I have ever seen before. The more affiliates around the faster the word is spreading and attendance is going up at CFW.

  17. Lisbeth Says:

@Brian: You’re exactly right. I call it “speaking the language.” It’s hard to explain CrossFit to people, but the more people that speak the language, the faster everyone becomes fluent. I’ve watched this across the country and the world now, from my perch at CFHQ. Yankees are a bit more reluctant to try new things — imagine that! — but they’re starting to speak the language.

    @Eric: James Brown.

  18. Nathan Says:

    @Eric/@Lis: Rocky IV frick yeah!

Speaking of which, check out this sick ass, dare I say “CrossFit-esque” training sequence:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0i7qjJKU4o

Look at that silly Drago using machines and drugs while Sly uses functional and real world world movements! Sure his double-unders could use a little work, but c’mon now, wasn’t that yesterdays WOD?

Though I don’t want to get into what happened to Apollo in Rocky IV, gets me a little too emotional.

Fun fact: I saw James Brown play a gymnasium at UVM. It was mint. And as far as Sly is concerned, the Expendables was badass! Though I do have to say that Drago looks terrifying these days.

  19. kirk Says:

The people in my building officially think I’m crazy…..I just climbed up onto the roof and screamed “DRAGOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!”

  20. Nathan Says:

I am thinking RX for our 400m runs should require yelling “DRAGOOOO” when we get to the turn around point.

  21. Joe Says:

Can i make a request to have that song from the video play during the WOD tonight?

  22. Rockstar Says:

Joe for the love of all that is pure, get a new gravatar….
