stillthecoachMe, explaining yesterday’s workout to the 5pm class.

Recently, we hit 1,000 posts on this blog. That’s pretty cool for something that started in my garage. When CrossFit Watertown began back in the fall of 2007, it was me and Melissa and Mary and a handful of others in my garage, trying some crazy stuff. CrossFit was a lot smaller then. We were around the 250th affiliate.

Now, there are 2,000 CrossFit affiliates worldwide and the applications for more keep flooding in. I know this because I read and vote on those essays in my position at CrossFit HQ.

We’ve seen a lot of changes in CrossFit and at CrossFit Watertown. First, the garage. Then 1600 sf. Then 4400 sf. And, certainly, we will see more changes in the future. But that’s okay. We’re still CrossFit Watertown. We’re still committed to the ideals started in that garage. All for one. One for all. Functional fitness to help you live your life better. And to help you become a better person. Like I said long ago in this same spot, if I only help you to become better athletes, then I have failed. My goal is, was, and always will be to help you become better people. I hope I’ve succeeded in some small measure.

If there’s one thing I know, it’s that change is inevitable. It’s going to come, whether you want it to or not. The only question is whether you grow from those changes. Hopefully, with good and true coaching, you do. And I don’t mean just coaching in the gym. I mean coaching in your life. Your friends, your family, your community — these are all important factors in how you accept change and grow.

With that in mind, I urge you to join me on Sept 25th in doing Fight Gone Bad to benefit Wounded Warriors and cancer survivors. Sign up and send a few e-mails and see if you can raise a few bucks. I know these are hard times for some, but imagine if you were a wounded vet or facing cancer — life would be even harder, huh? For every time that you feel sorry for yourself during a WOD (“It’s so hard”) or during a lift (“I just can’t get it right!”) remember that someone out there is facing a bigger obstacle, a higher hurdle, harder times. And they’re carrying on. So, if you’re complaining, just stop. Resolve today to complain no more. And just go do. And watch how life instantly improves for you. Thank you and I’ll see you at the gym.

My arms are absolutely shredded after Grace and last night’s WOD. Tonight should be interesting! OH, and BAM!!!!

  2. kirk Says:

By the way, how many of you looked at that WOD yesterday and thought, “that doesn’t look so bad?” I did and boy was I wrong. That was much tougher than I thought. DB push press combined with ring pushups is lethal. You would have thought I’d learn my lesson and realize NO workout is ever easy. If you go all out, you feel the pain! I also can’t believe Derek used 50′s for the DB push press. Beast.

  3. Brian Says:

This is no joke people. The Wounded Warrior project put one of my good friend’s kids through school after he was killed in the war against terror. Sign up and pledge what you can.

click the link, sing up and donate, it’ll take you less than 3 minutes tops. The energy in the gym last year when we did it was CRAZY….can’t wait to pull together and do it again!

Also we are going to be having a BBQ at our place later that afternoon for all to join, Jax is turning 2!

  5. Beery Says:

That picture is exactly the moment when Lis is telling us where the workout is going to suck the most and she was pretty accurate. For me the worst was 8-5 because by 8 I was no longer “fresh” but after 5 there were few enough reps where I was able to power through it. So that makes 7-6 the apex of sucking.

Derek, 50 pounds is insane… a five pound jump in dumbbell weight is massive and I found that while the push press wasn’t the most difficult part (at 45#) I really slowed down on the ring push-ups.

  6. K Says:

I will be singing up there with all of you!! Don’t worry Melissa!

  7. Lisbeth Says:

Nobody told me there was singing involved. Darn you, Melissa!

  8. K Says:

The Taste Of Love Is Sweet
    When Hearts Like Ours Meet
I Fell For You Like A Child
    Oh,But The Fire Went Wild……….

  9. Lisbeth Says:

Come on, Feel the noize, Girls Rock Your Boys. We’ll get wild, wild, wild.

  10. K Says:

…I think we’re alone now, there doesn’t seem to be anyone around…

  11. Lisbeth Says:

When you’re alone, you’re aloooone, when you’re alone, you ain’t nothing but alone

  12. K Says:

The problems, the things, we use, to solve ‘em
    Yonkers, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem
The hurt, the pain, the dirt, the rain
The jerk, the fame, the work, the game
The friends, the foes, the Benz, the hoes….

  13. Lisbeth Says:

The screen door slams, Mary’s dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays

  14. K Says:

Tommy used to work on the docks
    Union’s been on strike
He’s down on his luck…it’s tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
    For love – for love

  15. Lisbeth Says:

    You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
    You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

  16. Larry Says:

If the thunder don’t get you then the lightning will.

  17. Lisbeth Says:

Pint of gin in my bootcuff, I’m driving for a drink and a dance
Sitting on the next stool, Miss Little Time on Her Hands
I knew she was trouble, but trouble sure was looking fine
Next thing I knew what I knew kind of slipped my mind

  18. Brian Says:

The 80′s are calling and they want their songs back.

  19. kirk Says:

Did I detect some DMX lyrics above? I could be wrong. But anytime you see the word “hoes” DMX might be the genius behind it.

  20. Rockstar Says:

SOOOO love Tracey Chapman….for that alone I will sign or sing up…whatever… In a more serious note Lis you have made me a better person a stronger person. I cannot tell you how many times conversations we have had in the past resonated when I’m going through challenging moments in my life. It’s easy to give up and say “I can’t do this” but it is more rewarding to say I’ve learned to live in my “dark” side.

  21. Rockstar Says:

    BTW luv the phone pocket..

  22. K Says:

I see Larry is paying attention @ night!! You should join in on our games!!

    .. & HELL YEAH that’s some DMX!

  23. Eric Says:

Relax and take notes, while I toke on that marijuana smoke…

  24. Lisbeth Says:

@Jackie: Thank you! You’ve made me a better person too!

@Larry: Couldn’t you try just a little bit more?

@Brian: Don’t be shy. Join our reindeer games. It’s okay to love the 80′s. Really.
