Joe, working on muscle-up transitions.
“You can call me Joe. Buy me a drink and shake my hand. You want courage. I’ll show you courage you can understand.” That’s Springsteen talking, but his words apply here. See, our Joe here in the FDNY shirt is a volunteer firefighter.
Why is that important? In other than a “golf clap” kind of way?
Because Joe serves. He serves something other than himself, some ideal other than himself, people other than himself.
Like our teachers do. And our cops. And our military. And almost everyone who is a member of CrossFit Watertown. In some way, no matter if they manage people or they manage a portfolio, there is some aspect of their lives– personal or professional– where they take care of other people and serve.
See, we’re not interested in selfish bastards here. Really. Honestly. If you’re just out for yourself and what you can get in this life for you, don’t walk through our doors. We have no place for you here. Head down the street to a regular gym, put your earphones on, and disconnect from everyone.
Because if you come here, we expect you to connect, to take the headphones off, to become a part of a community, to give a sh** about other people, to serve. You don’t have to be a maniac about it. Just a “hello” here and a “nice work” there and maybe a “I’ll put that away for you” once in a while. Anything more than that is up to you. That sounds crazy for a gym, doesn’t it? This is just exercise, right?
Wrong. CrossFit is more than that. If you understand that — or even want to try to understand that — if you are looking for fantastic fitness and a community that actually cares, walk in here. Get in line behind Joe and learn some muscle-up transitions. You’ll be glad you did.
And to everyone who is out there serving: Thanks. We appreciate it.
Reminder: Free Workout every Saturday at 9am. Call or e-mail us if you’d like to attend.
Schedule Alert: The Sun 9am class will meet at the Taft School fields off Guernseytown Road in Watertown. There will be a workout and you’ll learn how to play Ultimate Frisbee. How can you beat that?

Joe! It’s been great watching you come into your own at CFW! You have such great enthusiasm and intensity…you kick ass at every WOD! I love working out with you!
Cherry (that’s Kathleen if you didn’t know) busted out a 183 deadlift last night… and she’s droppin’ lbs. and killin’ it in every WOD! Watchout for her, she’s gonna be a force to be recokened with very soon ladies! Keep kickin’ ass!
LuAnne… so quiet but so strong! Another one who brings intensity and focus to her WODs. The gains you’ve made are really impressive! WhooHoo!
Our new members are coming up fast and strong…. you guys rock!

Thank you for the daily dose of inspiration Lis! Can’t wait to visit CrossFit Watertown someday!

Joe did great last night in his first bout with double-unders during a WOD (I think it was his first). Anyway, they came at the very end of that “Filthy-15″ WOD and he showed fire and desire…..you could see it in his eyes. He was getting those DU’s done no matter what. He was tired and hot and ready for the WOD to end, but he got it done. Great work!
July 30th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Yeah Joe!
Joe is rocking the house. He is laying it all out during the WODs! Get on with you bad self good sir, glad to have you aboard.
6pm class rulz!!!! Though we didn’t make the whiteboard photo
Matt is a beast-man.
July 30th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
I asked . . . but the e-mail revealed no secrets of the 6 and 7pm classes last night . . .
July 30th, 2010 at 12:19 pm
Here’s what I love . . . 14 people in that 5pm class on a hot July day and it ran smooth as anything. Melissa and Sue had it handled. Everyone got good coaching and everyone got a good workout. Thanks, Melissa and Sue!
July 30th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
Let’s also recognize the fact that over 40 members cycled through CFW yesterday… yay us!
July 30th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
Toon – 4:36??? Did you remember to do all the movements???
July 30th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
You know, this workout killed me on time — although I was proud to get ALL the double-unders, even if they were one-at-a-painful-flippin-time. And the 24″ box jumps aren’t easy on a bad leg with a 28″ inseam. (Oooh, poor me. STFU, Lis.) Anyhow, still, I kinda dug it. And I’d like to try it with only 10 reps. Anyone want to do a reprise after the 9am on Sat? It’ll take us like 5 min. We’ll already be warmed up from the WOD. This may be my dumbest idea since “Let’s have 3 beers and do half-Grace” but WTH, you only live once.
So, who wants to be stupid with me on Sat?
July 30th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
@ Lis-
I’m down.. tho— I do triple the SU’rs.. I think it’s still fair…
July 30th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
PS- Becky. I love you.
July 30th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
N8, don’t sell yourself short, you rocked that WOD too. And, for some odd reason your DU’s weren’t on point, otherwise you could have gone maybe 10 or 15 seconds faster. A manly man you are!!! It was great racing through that WOD with Barry and Derek and finishing withing like 7 seconds of each other. And, the 7 pm was rockin’ last night. A bunch of fire-breathing males, and Viv. ha.
July 30th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
And, if I remember right, Matt smoked it with a 6:50, N8 threw down with a 7:58?? Must have been the coaching.
July 30th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
I thought there was a team wod meeting after the sat class?
July 30th, 2010 at 1:30 pm
There is an Albany event mtg after class, and a coaches mtg after that.
July 30th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Still, if we’re only doing 10 reps of everything, we’ll be done in 5min or less. Add 5 min for equip set-up and organization. 10 min tops. If we skip post-class foam rolling and sub the Crazy 10, we’re still good for both mtgs to go as planned.
Then again, I’m late to everything so I’m not stressing. Those who stress may not like this plan.
July 30th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
Matt killed the WOD in the 6pm class, and he’s not even 100% yet.
WTF Matt!! Once your back at 100% it’s gonna be great to see the times you get.
July 30th, 2010 at 2:37 pm
“Head down the street to a regular gym, put your earphones on, and disconnect from everyone.”
This is something that really irked me at the Globogym down the road. It was the type of place where everyone would put their headphones on and try to make as little eye contact as possible and some people were just downright rude. THIS IS WHY I LOVE CFW! The camaraderie is an ongoing thing, it doesn’t end when the WOD ends- when I’m totally sucking at a running WOD and someone who finished way before me gets up and runs with me to keep me going, that’s like the ultimate best thing to happen to me that day. And then once I come back from the run and am collapsed on the floor/completely dead to the world… there are amazing people breaking my bar down for me. And once I get up and am able to effectively communicate, those same people are right there saying “Good work today, Rach!” There’s really nothing that compares to our CFW family!!!

July 30th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
must say, the coaching @ 7pm was banging. Vivi & da Boyz killed that WOD…we all did 20reps (considering I was asked 1st what I was going at & said 20, even if they wanted to go less, don’t think any of them really would have!!!hahaha)& all Rx’d or went above…Nice Job..& Pam plays this funny mind game w/ me and Bill during WODs…kinda makes me want to punch him in his face if he beats me!!!
July 30th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
i loved that wod. and by the way, heck yes kat!!!! just grippin and rippin 183 like it was nothing! it was so great to see how happy she was because she was so nervous, and then she just whipped out THREE of them!
July 30th, 2010 at 5:57 pm

So… is this a regular ultimate frisbee game or does it have some sort of CrossFit twist to it? I haven’t played in years, might try to make an appearance.
July 30th, 2010 at 11:54 pm
Saw that highlight on ESPN other day. I’m pumped to throw the B around this Sunday.

Why do I always get the same gravamonster? it looks like a three-eyed hamburger with crab hands and decidedly un-female naughty parts.
July 31st, 2010 at 3:19 pm
got mine to work
July 31st, 2010 at 5:16 pm
