Give It A Shot

CFW Daily

looklikeKarianneKarianne (intern with CFHQ Training Staff) at our last L1 Cert.

We all need something to aim for. A target. An ideal. A goal.

People spend a lot of time saying goals should be reasonable and realistic. And, most of the time, I agree.

But not today. I’m only interested in dreaming big today.

Because here’s the problem: When we use words like “reasonable” and “realistic”, what happens? We dream small. We keep our hopes in check. We barely stray out of our comfort zones. Safe . . . but boring. Unexciting. Our pulses barely rise above normal.

F*** normal.

I’m dreaming big today. I’m tacking this photo of Karianne up on the wall and I’m aiming for this level of fitness, this kind of body, this kind of strength. Life needs to be like that old stupid Bon Jovi song: “It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not/We’ve got each other and that’s a lot for love/We’ll give it a shot.”

Pick a new goal today. Pick something you want to achieve. Scrawl it on a scrap of paper and tack it up on your wall. Write today’s date on it.

It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not. What matters is that we work towards our goals. What matters is that we give it a shot, again and again. Plan big, but start small. I’ll see you at the gym.

    Bam!! ;)

“Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic it.” -Goethe (or could have been Bon Jovi too.) Great timing of this post Lis, I was just thinking about this very topic. I think for me, the key to accomplishing my goals is in finding the tweaks in lifestyle, behavior, attitude, etc that will get me to see, act and feel differently. Consistency for me is the key; entropy is a motherf&*%^er.

Yooooooooooooooooooo your half way there, ( I love that Bon Jovi song)
becoming a better runner, thats one of my goals I want to accomplish.

  4. migs Says:

Mickey, the best way to get better at running is to just do it. I’ll be doing a lot of trail running after this weekend and you’re more than welcome to come with. Plus it’s nice to have a running partner.

GOALS!!! We all have them (or should) and I agree with Lis, the bigger the better. There should be short range goals (start small) and BIG ones. Keep in mind, you may have many failures on the way but, that’s the only way to learn, get better and, achieve.
For me: To Compete. With myself, with other athletes bigger, better, stronger, faster than me. That’s the only way you can get better.
Crossfit Games for me. Maybe not this year but, I will get there.
The journey will make me a better person (I hope) I will live and function longer for my wife and family as well as myself and I can’t think of a better “family to do this with than CFW.

News Update! You guys know our very own Melissa is competing in the Sectionals this weekend in Milford. (Go Melissa!) Although we have not formally announced it yet, we will be closed this Sat and Sun so that we can all go cheer on Melissa.

And we just received the following news from the Milford folks:

“I’m writing with good news! We just found out that anyone that has registered as a spectator is allowed to bring a guest with them. (included in the $50 fee). If a single person registers, it is still $50 (not $25.) Hopefully this will get more spectators here to give your athletes the support they deserve!”

  7. Rich Says:

Lis, I just registered (spectator) for Milford. Mary and I will be cheering on Melissa Saturday and hopefully WOD #2 on Sunday.
It’s my understanding the way it will work is:
    (2) wod’s on Saturday (1) am (1) pm.
    (2) wod’s on Sunday (1) am. only the top 50 (25 male & 25 female) will compete in the pm wod with the top 10 (5 male & 5 female) will go to the Crossfit Games Regional in Albany, NY in May.
There are a number of ways to get to Milford CF if anyone is intrested in a “caravan”.

  8. jen Says:

Yeah, come to Milford and support Melis this Sat! Scream and yell and watch Melis do some crazy ass WOD!

Then on Sunday if your around go to Jules Salon and See Jackie, Becky and Anita show off some hot dresses with their CFW bodies!

USAW National 105kg class. Need a 187 total to qualify
I can’t get the games website at work. Are the WOD’s up yet for Milford?

  10. Pameroid Says:

    Nope, not yet.

  11. Nathan Says:

Speaking of running… Sessions Woods WMA is right next to my crib and it has a very scenic, surprising hilly, 3 mile+ gravel loop that I think would be a great run. I know it is terrible to bike yet is a lovely walk – running it I am pretty sure will be horrible. Since its length is pretty close to a 5k, anyone interested in meeting up one of these days for a jog? Maybe beer and snacks after at my place? Good practice for the mudder and/or warrior dash?

    The loop looks like this.

It is really nice there. Beaver pond, waterfalls, all sorts of neato stuff.

Hoping to make it on Saturday or Sunday – still trying to hash out my weekend.

  12. Pamela Says:

    Nate that sounds awesome!

  13. Sue Loz Says:

Nate that sounds fantastic and brutal! Let’s get the calender and put down a date and time!

  14. Pamela Says:

    [Insert Beaver Pond joke here]

  15. Mikey Says:

Migs let me know, I’ll be down to do some trail running.

  16. migs Says:

Nate, wow you read my mind! I was thinking of doing a couple of the nass loops on foot. It’ll be awful and great at the same time. This is the last week of skiing for me so anytime after this weekend is good.

  17. Nathan Says:

@migs: Yup! You know the sessions gravel loop – that would be good (read: nasty) right? :)

Plenty of trails in there as well, last check I have about 50 miles mapped! Dirt trails are all soup in there right now though.

  18. migs Says:

@nate: Good point sir. I was also thinking about running at middlesexy, but I would need you and your expert tracking skills to navigate that place or else i’m surely doomed.

  19. migs Says:

Hmm. A cfw trail running club could be fun. Meet up on the weekends for a leisurely stroll through the woods. All (members/non members) would be welcome and no one gets left behind.

  20. beery Says:

Nate/Migs/Mikey/Sue – I’m in for the run. I haven’t run more than 400m since November so this should be interesting. Becky has the fashion show this Sunday (Are boys allowed?) and I was planning on performing my own (read: wear her clothes) while she was out but I guess a run would suffice. Or the following Sunday, unless my beautiful wife tells me that I’m otherwise engaged.

Hop Brook and Black Rock have some pretty nasty trail hills. I know Hop Brook’s trails have gotten really bad over the last few years but if anybody wants to pick Friday and head out for a run before the 5:00 they’re both pretty local (less than 10 min from CFW).

  21. jen Says:

You guys said Woods and Beavers…hehehehehehe! Naked trail running club!

  22. Lisbeth Says:

    Bwaahahaha. I love Beery.

  23. Sue Loz Says:

    Let’s figure that out!

  24. Rockstar Says:

I’m in, to see BAD ASS Melissa shred those wods…For those of u who can’t make it…there will be tons of pics of our Superstar…

  25. K Says:

    woods n beavers hehehe..
I dont think i can make it this weekend since I missed so much work this week :( .. but you nver know I guess..
@ nate… I will trail run all day!

  26. lelak Says:

Bodyweight overhead. That’s what I’m shooting for.
