Migs, Big D, Rockstar, and N8 during last week’s row clinic in the Wednesday night workout. (Does anyone have real names anymore?)
Last night, we ran a similar clinic, but this time for Sumo Deadlift High Pull. Two folks were miraculously cured like lepers in the Old Testament, while others saw some nice refinements of previous trouble spots. (Okay, I might have exaggerated a bit on the leper thing. It was more like clearing up a mild rash.)
Anyhow, we’re seeing great improvements with this clinic focus and we’re going to continue it. Tell us in Comments what movement you’d like to see us focus on next.
In other news, the Watertown Fall Festival is this Saturday. We’ll be holding workouts at 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 2:30pm at the Festival. Sign up at the gym if you want to participate in the workouts or if you can volunteer an hour or two to hang out at the booth. (If you need any clinics in the art of shaking hands, I’m available. Just ask. Really, don’t be shy.)

To me, the most interesting about these clinics, well, at least with the KB and rowing ones (SDHP has always been an enigma to me), was that I thought I already had a pretty good grasp of those movements.
But by the time we finished working on them, I really felt a 100% more proficient in doing them.
I suppose what I am saying is surprise me so I can be surprised?
But I do feel I am terrible at the olympic lifts and their relatives.
Maybe kipping pullups?
September 17th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Nate — the Oly lifts always make us feel that way. So much to master. So difficult to get right. And that is the reason behind their lure. Stupid sexy Olympic lifts.
September 17th, 2009 at 10:02 am
I could stand to use more olympic lifting practice myself, particularly clean and jerks.
September 17th, 2009 at 10:04 am
jump rope
rowing
cleaning odd weighted objects
I thought last nights wod was really fun and I really enjoyed the clinic. I too like Nate come away from being analyzed with a sense of, oh, that’s how it’s supposed to feel/look etc. I think for me it is in doing more and practicing the skills and precursors to the movements that I want to get better at or actually do (pistols, ring dips, etc)

snatch and hspu
September 17th, 2009 at 11:17 am
Last night’s clinic kicked a$$! I was just yanking the weight up previously, now I have some technique. Maybe that’s why I hurt my back doing SDHP’s before?? I’m glad we’ll be continuing the Wed. night clinics. Very helpful. I always need more help with Olympic lifts, as well. Maybe push jerk, because I feel I should be able to lift more weight. Something in my technique is def. holding me back.
September 17th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Ummm So much to work on, so little time. Overhead Squat or Snatch would be my weakest no doubt.
September 17th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Ah, David, the answer lies not in doing it more so much as in doing it right when you do it. Five perfect, smooth SDHP with proper opening of the hips will do more for a person’s technique than 50 yank and jerks.
September 17th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Hhehehe! Lis said, “yank and jerks”! heheh!
I’d like to work on my snatch more!

Let’s do a little experimental survey here. Choose one answer from the each of the following three questions and post here. (Pick only ONE option from each number.)
1.) I hate front squats.
I sort of enjoy front squats.
I flippin’ LOVE front squats.
2.) I hate overhead squats.
I sort of enjoy overhead squats.
I flippin’ LOVE overhead squats.
3.) I hate snatches.
I sort of enjoy snatches.
I flippin’ LOVE snatches.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Love them all but that doesn’t mean I’m any good at them.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Okay, let’s rephrase our survey. Instead, name the top 3 lifts you love. I know this is like choosing which child you like best, but bear with me.
For me:
1.) Front Squat
2.) Clean
3.) Overhead Squat
September 17th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
1. squat
2. deadlift
3. clean

Honorable Mention to Dead Lift, but it gets demoted because I suck at it more than the others.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Um… I think we’re only supposed to be talking about how we feel about front squats, OHS, and snatches.
1. I sort of enjoy front squats.
2. I flippin’ LOVE overhead squats.
3. I flippin’ LOVE snatches.
Now that I can do the last two reasonably well, I love doing them.
September 17th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Love Power Cleans!
Like Power Clean and Jerks!
Like Bench Press!
Not really liking anything else at the moment…hit the wall hard…frustration setting in with just about all other lifts, especially the deadlift.
September 17th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Hmmm… this is tough, but I am going to go with:
OHS
Clean
Jerks
On another note, I might not be making the 6pm class tonight because of puppy duties. She didn’t seem like she was doing well this morning and neither the lady or I would get home at a reasonable hour if I went straight to crossfit.
So…. I am going to try to get out of here at 5pm, rush home, grab her and then rush down to CFW (Granted it is ok she hangs out for another class?).
Huh, that was a lot of information…
September 17th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I was rushing just reading your comment about rushing N8
