Killing the Teacher

CFW Daily

burgwuwhatA high-school English teacher of mine once told me of a Latin phrase that basically meant: “Kill the teacher.” It’s not to be taken at face value. What it means is, that if you have talent and are well-taught by someone, eventually you will outperform them — and that you should strive towards that goal. It’s a natural thing to happen. You’ll get good enough that, one day, you’ll be better than your teacher.

Everyone at CrossFit Watertown should be striving for that goal — even if you think you have no chance of ever reaching it. You’re better than you realize at all of these things we practice. I point out your shortcomings because that’s my job — to teach you. But you should really want to kill me — and the rest of the coaches.

There’s another Latin phrase (“aut disce aut discede”) which means “Either learn or leave” — and that’s true for CrossFit Watertown too. But we’re all learning — and nobody’s leaving. So, now you get to take a look at this photo and tell me who needs correction on this phase of theĀ  Burgener warm-up and what cues or words might help to correct them?

  5. Lisbeth Says:

Holy cow, it must be back to school day, huh? The blog is dead and no one wants to discuss the Burgener Warm-up?

    Well, okay . . .

  6. Matt Says:

Both guys – “When the arms bend the power ends” and “finish” full extension on the down and up!

  7. Nathan Says:

Manslaughter aside…. I would like to commend Lisbeth on the use of the word “bupkis” on the a-blog today.

As far as words go, that is one of my personal favorites.

  8. Greg Says:

and there is also the issue of the hook grip with a few folks in the picture.

  9. K Says:

K – just came upstairs after swimming…you weren’t kidding – I couldn’t even lift my arms to dry my hair!!

I got your text but my phone is acting up so I couldn’t respond (I got it wet). You got to love the parking situations!!

And I checked that website & still no post…

  11. Rich Says:

Yes, triple extension. Some are flatfooted with bent arms.
And if anyone thinks there is nothing left to learn then they really shouldn’t be at CFW!!!

  12. kirk Says:

As soon as Big D gets the shrug/triple extension thing worked out, he might be able to lift the whole gym!
