The Best Things in Life Are Hard

Articles, CFW Daily

migsbsI hear CrossFit is hard. That’s the number one thing I hear from people who have not tried CrossFit. That it’s hard. I’ve been CrossFitting for almost three years now and “hard” is not the first word that comes to mind. These words do: Fun. Pain. Blissful. Disturbed. Manic. Satisfying. Community. Accomplishment. Worthwhile. Love.

Maybe it is hard. But maybe the best things in life are hard. Childbirth is hard. College is hard. Staying in a committed relationship is hard. Caring for elderly parents is hard. And there are a million other things that fit this category.

Just because something is hard doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. In fact, it’s often one of the best reasons you should.

You can sit on your ass and let life pass you by and “take it easy” and end up having others care for you someday because you can no longer care for yourself.  Or you can go and do your “three strength days/two cardio days” at your local gym and never see any results, even though you’ve been going there for years. (You’re wasting so much of your own time – just say no!) Those are the easy choices in the easy life.

Or you can get off the treadmill, turn off the TV, and get in the game of life and do something that’s not easy. CrossFit until you’re 90 and feel like a million dollars every day you’re breathing. A hard-earned, well-worth-it, kick-ass million dollars.

Hard choice, huh?

Get off the fence and get in the game. It’s already later than you think. Why wait to have a better life?

First and off the Fence! Great words, Lis.

  2. jen Says:

    Nice one Janice!
Hey does anyone know a good place close by to trail run?

  3. becky Says:

Trail run with no hills? Bridal Trails — If you go down Straits Turnpike the entrance is on your right (past Leo’s and Bally’s and Hop Brook Park)

Trail run with hills – hit Hop Brook Park! (Straits Turnpike – Entrance is on your left go down the hill and you will see some signs for the trails)

  4. jen Says:

Becky want to go with me next week sometime?

  5. Greg Says:

Another great post Lis. No shut the lid to your laptop and hit the track at Taft… Run some 800s for time. That’s hard. Get off the fence. Everyone at CFW knows how much you like running. I’ll meet you there. Just start without me.

  6. Lisbeth Says:

Wow. The post sat unguarded for 6 hours before Janice got to it. That might be a new record. Does this mean the PowerBarners have truly faded into myth and legend? That actually makes me kind of sad . . .

  7. Tanner Says:

Not so fast there Lis, we’re still here, but we’re like ninjas, we strike at the right time, in fact I bet Eric is just sitting there waiting for a good post to respond to right now.

  8. jen Says:

Where is Rich? Where is Mike(MS)?

  9. Lisbeth Says:

Eric is a big floppy-eared puppy. He’s got his head in the feed bowl. Unless somebody throws a tennis ball, he won’t show up.

Rich is traveling again? But Mike . . . hmmm . . . all Mikes are absent today. Wait, anybody ever see the Bob Newhart show? This is my brother Daryl and my other brother Daryl. I think Mike is now the Other Mike. So we have Mikey, the Other Mike, and Psycho Mike.

  10. jen Says:

Where am I…Chris…what state is this again?

  11. jen Says:

After reading what Lis Wrote maybe I should just start to work on Ice Cream makers…and push aside my fear.

    Ninjas! ha!

  13. Nathan Says:

Nice shot of migs “I have no idea what my max squats are” migs! Fail for once dam you!!!! :)

Otherwise, yesterday was great/terrible. I can’t believe how hard that last handful of OHS were! Not that any were exactly easy of course. Ugh. And F’in Matt doing it in 16 minutes! Close to halving my time. Nice work!

Uh yup. And we might have my lady-wife joining us for 6 tonight (of course if it is ok with the powers that be).

  14. melissa Says:

Great post Lis! Just came back from a lovely session with Jen…can’t wait to put you all through it this evening…Nate make sure you get some protein in for lunch…you’re strong lady-wife will probably wipe the floor with you on this one!

  15. Taylor Says:

Rich returns tonight… DUN DUN DUN

  16. Lisbeth Says:

Of course Mrs. Nate is always welcome!

BTW, anybody know how to find an above-ground pool leak? Yeah, my day’s not going so well . . .

  17. Greg Says:

I thought you had a pool girl to take care of those things?

  18. Lisbeth Says:

    She’s coaching.

Woke up to find most of the pool water gone. This is not good.

  19. Chris Says:

Excellent commentary as usual, Lis. I can’t tell you how many people say exactly that: “CrossFit looks too hard.” If only they knew how rewarding it could be.

@Jen- I think we’re in New Hampshire or something. *shrug*

  20. Janice Says:

I know we have had a lot of rain lately, but can you tell if the lawn is wetter? Did you check all your fittings? Is it below the skimmer? Did you leave any of the valves open so it drained through the backwash hose?

  21. Janice Says:

Did you call the police and report there is a ‘water’ burgular in town?

  22. Janice Says:

If all else fails, call the pool store. Sometimes they give great advice over the phone. I was able to fix my pump that way. Phil at Dolphin has been great to us.

  23. Nathan Says:

Maybe try a “puff” of food coloring in the pool and try to watch where it migrates to?

  24. Lisbeth Says:

    Pool stores, check.
    Food coloring, check.
    Still nothing.
Best thing was Justas putting a piece of tape at waterline this morning. Water has not gone below. Now, the hunt for the leak above the tape line.

  25. K Says:

    Justas is a smart cookie…
I’m disappointed no one has made a dirty comment yet…. I guess it’s left to me again…
Yes Lis, I agree- the best things in life are HARD! bahahaha (am I the only perv laughing????) lol

  26. Lisbeth Says:

I’ve been waiting since midnight for that, K! You never disappoint!

  27. Chris Says:

@Lis- By the way, thanks for spelling out the COMPLETE details of today’s WOD on the board. We don’t want people making silly mistakes.

  28. becky Says:

Chris – would you like to share with others what the WOD board said??

Jen I am available basically anytime next week – you let me know what time…actually I will prolly be seeing you sometime within the next two days…

    HAHAHA K said hard

  29. K Says:

    bahahaha .. love you Lis-
    Becky said hard lol
oh, I could do this all day!

  30. becky Says:

Chris would you say that the WOD was HARD???

    hahahaha – your turn K

  31. Chris Says:

@Becky – Oh, it was hard all right. Everyone was sweaty and tired afterwards.

  32. Lisbeth Says:

I think Becky meant to ask if it was hard AND long.

Hahaha. We are fifth-graders. We’re such losers.

  33. K Says:

Well Lis? Was it LONG?? I mean everyone agrees it was hard- Chris said everyone was sweaty too… But just how long was it???

  34. sueloz Says:

Today’s workout was SICK! I went, thinking that we were doing 2×4 snatch and got 30 wallball and 30 harng pow snatch time 3???? As Nate so eloquently put it: WTF? Tomorrow, I shall rest!

  35. Lisbeth Says:

LOL — Sue gets snagged by the Disinformation Campaign two days in a row. Bwhahahaha. (Or, as it’s known by its other name: Lis and her early-onset Alzheimers.)

  36. Lisbeth Says:

I really do wish I could remember the WODs. Jen thinks I have car-induced amnesia. Because every time we start to drive over to CFW for the WOD, I turn to her and ask, “What’s the WOD again?”
