Learning to Love the Barbell

CFW Daily

melbarWe don’t just do barbell work. But the barbell is crucial to CrossFit. So, like it or not, you have to learn to love the barbell.

Some of us take to the barbell easily. Some of us don’t.

Melissa is the MetCon Mistress of CrossFit Watertown. Make it fast and you’re sucking wind behind her.

But she has a weakness. And it’s made of steel and sits in the corner and yells names at her. (Oh wait, that’s us too. Anyhow . . .)

Melissa has to learn to love the barbell. Because, right now, the barbell knows that she doesn’t like it. And it’s talking to the rower, and they know Melissa hates them too. Lucky for her, the kettlebells and the jumpropes are on her side. But who knows how long they can hold out . . .

In other news, no 5pm tonight. Beat Dan Out of the Gang WOD/Party starts at 6pm (loosely) but Dan the Man won’t be there until 6:30, so we’ll really start once he gets here. Let’s talk in Comments for the details — who’s bringing what, etc.

Same two words as yesterday: Bacon Explosion!

  2. Kiwi Matt Says:

Oh and two little beer swilling pugs :-)

  3. Kiwi Matt Says:

as well as Jason. I think that is about all.

  4. Lisbeth Says:

I’m bringing my charm and warmth.

  5. Lisbeth Says:

And something else. Must think. (And had to break Matt’s attempt at the record for most consecutive posts on our blog. I think the record is 7.)

  6. Lisbeth Says:

    Wonder who holds that?

  7. Lisbeth Says:

Oh wait, that didn’t sound good.

  8. kirk Says:

Lis, did you know Fran was coming up on the Main Site this week? It’s crazy how someone always seems to call a workout before it happens (mostly Chris). We are good! I think we’re bringing some fruit tonight (yes, we’ll be the healthy nerds). We might bring some beverages, too. By the way, we had some good Fran times last night. Nate is officially back in action, as he killed it. I have a feeling he’ll shave a lot more time off by the end of the summer. Mine felt a good 3 minutes slower than last time, but somehow I went faster. It was painful as usual.

  9. A hardy, strong, and well-developed specimen of physical manhood Says:

I’ll bring beer and whatever healthy crap Becky brings… paleo fruit wedges or something.

  10. Jill Says:

are we really going healthy? that so ruins my plan to bring frosting for everyone….

  11. Jen L *&^% Says:

    BBQ Chickens and Beer

  12. Dan Says:

Frosting is only ok if it comes with cupcakes

I’ve also had way to much beer and bad food this week, i’ll try to get out of here as early as possible tonight, I think my brother is coming with me and have to pick him up on the way

  13. kirk Says:

Dan, is your brother also a master of the OHS? Do I smell a brother vs. brother challenge? Winner faces Kathrine, clothing optional. That’s if she shows up….haven’t seen you in a while!!

  14. Lisbeth Says:

Unfortunately, K is in Cali. Someone must sub shirtless for her. I hereby nominate Becky.

  15. Lisbeth Says:

And, Jill, frosting is like a fine chardonnay. Or cash at Christmastime. It goes with everything.

I think a mixture of healthy and unhealthy foods would be delightful. (That’s my word of the day.) But perhaps not in one food. For example, fried blueberries would be bad. Ditto for chocolate-covered fish.

  16. kirk Says:

By the way, Valentines Day Cupcakes are on sale at the Big Y today. Just saying.

  17. Dan Says:

K is in Cali Kirk – your so out of the facebook loop…even Sue is on fb now

I think my brother literally fears working out with me, he’s done it a couple times and then started making an effort to beat me home and workout before I got home so I couldn’t critique anything he was doing…

  18. Greg Says:

Bringing Bacon and Beer… Maybe a wife and some kids for a little bit but that is still TBD.

  19. Lisbeth Says:

Oooh, bring the family! You know my buddy B. wants to see Miss Lis’s Cool House again!

  20. Dan Says:

    I just hope Greg remember’s that we’re his son’s friends…not his

  21. Jill Says:

I’m all over the valentines cupcakes! Thanx for info Kirk! I’ll bring something healthy too…

  22. Jackie #1 Says:

What’s the WOD for tonight? Come on, tempt me…maybe I’ll show up.
Lis you know the muscle groups I need to work on…

  23. lisbeth Says:

Girlfriend, get your a** in here. You know you want to be here.

  24. sueloz Says:

    Hey all…
I have to say, I’m bummer that I missed Fran…maybe I can take a crack at it this weekend???

I will be there tonight to beat Dan out of the gang…I call the first punch.

While I didn’t have time to whip up some chili (sorry Kirk) I will bring some meatballs in sauce (not an optimal protien, but what the hell) and Melissa…I’ve got an excellent bottle of RED!

    See you all later!

BTW….Nate you rock!!!! I’ll take the bike…I can give you the $$$ tonight if you’re there! WooHoo!!!!!!

  25. Kiwi Matt Says:

@ Lis chocolate covered fish are great, but they must be marshmallow fish. These are very popular in New Zealand – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate_fish

  26. Rich Says:

We are in for tonight!!! Chocolate coated Strawberries, bread to go with Sue’s meatballs and of course a big bottle of red.

  27. Chris Says:

    A. Can I do Fran tonight?
    B. I’ll bring some snack-type snacks. Pretzels and such.

  28. Tracey Says:

    Good luck Dan…
I am sorry to be missing your send off soiree….

  29. Jill Says:

Stopped @ stew leonards for some brownie cupcakes…let’s hope they actually make it to cfw! I did get some veggies & dip for you health freaks!

  30. Dan Says:

@Chris, no more drinking on your lunch break…i think its affecting your judgement

  31. Kiwi Matt Says:

@ Chris, good god man! What are you thinking?

  32. Kiwi Matt Says:

@ Chris. Pretzels? What have you been drinking?

  33. Jackie #1 Says:

Okay…You twisted my arm…I’ll show up around 6:30 and I’ll bring whatever my maid can cook up…

  34. Lisbeth Says:

Whoo hoo! Jackie #1 is in the house tonight!

(And it’s not polite to refer to your husband as your maid. Trust me on this one.)

  35. Jackie #1 Says:

    Okay…Hee…Hee…Hee

  36. Lisbeth Says:

And Chris — no Fran for you today — but I’m certain Sue would like company for when she does Fran this weekend!

  37. Nathan Says:

I will not be able to make it tonight for the WOD or party :(

Sorry I must miss the festivities and good luck to Dan!!!! Y’all should pound a couple of spritzers for me! Fo sho.
