Jenny and Kirk with the 6am Beanie Crew in the midst of the Press/Push Press/Push Jerk combo that is today’s workout. (It’s a tad bit “brisk” in the safe today but we’re determined to keep the landlord happy until our new space is ready — hopefully, soon!)
In BIG news, the 5pm class tonight will see the return of . . . somebody we really missed. Post your guesses to Comments.
In other news, we need to decide on the Rock Climbing Excursion date: Sat/Feb 7th or Sun/Feb 8th? If we get 12 people, the cost is only $35 per person. Post your choice in Comments.
We forgot to do Birthday Burpees for Becky yesterday! That means 26+1 tonight for the 5 and 6pm classes . . . (Everyone else, play along at home.)
Finally, Jon Gilson at Again Faster has Double Under tips for us: Video.

hmm…is it Jackie #1??
so with this WOD do you want to keep the weight the same or increase it throughout the sets?
January 27th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Lis – looked back at when I did this before – 10/20 & 7/1. I was only at 75 lbs in July & then 65 lbs in October. So I’m really happy with this morning.
January 27th, 2009 at 10:58 am
@Dan. Keep the same weight throughout. I’ve been stuck on the same weight for this workout 3 times in a row. Can’t seem to go up without totally losing form. By the way, the mini metcon was short but it seemed to pack a punch. Do you agree, Greg?
January 27th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Jackie #1?
YOU FORgot to do BDAY BURPEE !!!!! how convenient. Looking forward to getting back to it.
Double Unders should be so easy>
January 27th, 2009 at 11:12 am
@Dan: Kirk’s right for the way we do this one. You’ll see some variation among the main site crowd, but I think the way we do it is best. Pick a weight that is pretty darn close to your 1RM in the press and then stick with it. Although the movement will get easier as you progress (push press vs. press, push jerk vs. push press) your reps will increase and so will your fatigue. If you select your weight correctly and work on maintaining your form, you should be seriously at your limit on the last set of each exercise group.
For example, my press 1RM is 85lb — on a great day, with ugly form, I might hit 90. So I pick 80 as my weight for this. The 5 single presses kill me and then the fatigue and reps kill me for the push press and the push jerk.
You’ll see some people do it differently in main site comments, but most of them end up having to take weight off in the push jerk because they’re dying. You shouldn’t have to take weight off in the push jerk. You should just be barely able to make it.
(And no, it’s not Jackie who’s returning tonight . . .)

Curse you Mini MetCon (shaking my fist at the air), your stupid seat, and that first pull. Ha! I think… know it took me longer to recover from the Mini Met then it took to do it.
@Dan – I kept the same weight. The weight was probably right on for presses. However, I probably could have thrown on another 5 lbs once I could use my legs.
@Rich – I was looking for you guys doing your burpees courtside last night but couldn’t find you.
January 27th, 2009 at 11:20 am
@Dan – Disregard my last post now that I see Lis’s post. What I meant to say was that I used the same weight and it was spot on.

Rock climbing? Sunday the 8th is better for me because my son now has a birthday party on the 7th..
Lis.. If it is snowing like the dickens tomorrow morning I will not be there at 6AM… Hopefully it will have stopped by 5:00pm…
January 27th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Chris I will do the 7th or the 8th!
January 27th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
I’m thinkin’ that the Great Nate will be joining us again!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!
January 27th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
I have insider info about who the guest will be….but I’ll keep it a secret until Lis wants to spill the beans. I do agree that we need Nate back. Nate, hope the back feels better. Come in for some light workouts and it will get better from there, I know frome experience.
January 27th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
@Greg, I did a squat in front of the ESPN camera but I’m sure it didn’t make the show.
Great game!!
@Greg/Kirk-What did you use for wt. in todays WOD?
January 27th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
I’m going with jackie or CAITLIN!!!!
January 27th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
The lumberjack?
January 27th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
who’s doing the rock climbing?
January 27th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Yentl is wise beyond her years . . .
@Jackie: A whole bunch of fun people. I signed up but I’m going to be in Austin that weekend, so feel free to take my spot! Really. If you want to come, just say so.
January 27th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Oh — and I just stopped by our new space and the sheetrock was going up. No heat yet (you could see your breath) and the electricians still have work to do. Plus the floors will need to be sanded (and of course the walls will need to be taped and mudded) — but we’ve got progress!
January 27th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
James makes double-unders look just a little to easy…a good video though and its something i need to work on
Any idea on times for the rock climbing thing? I think i should be able to make it
And is there a 6am tomorrow or is it weather / reservation dependant?
January 27th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
@Rich – I was at 115 and Kirk was 125
January 27th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Chris is in charge of the rock climbing excursion, so he might have info on times.
6am tomorrow will go on, pretty much no matter what. It’s almost all flat roads between my house and CFW, until you hit the hill in Oakville, and then a good hard left turn shoots me into that parking lot pretty good. So it would have to be the storm of the century for me not to be there.
Oh — and the 6pm tomorrow night is rowing-centered.
January 27th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Unfortunately I am Skiing up in Canuk Land Feb 6/7th so will be unable to Climb. We could set another climbing date up for the future, perhaps outdoors, I have the gear. Gear is Good!! Welcome back Caitlin?
January 27th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I wish it was me that was coming back tonight
Though I am intrigued.
January 27th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Nate,
When are you coming back?
Kirk had some good advice above.
Show up, do something light, get some motion, and things will improve.
(I’m not sure, but I think I just channeled Ray-Ray there.)
January 27th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
No I agree, Nate, I was apprehensive to come back after experiencing back pain for the last 8 months. Still attacks at night, but my theory is just keep moving and it can’t catch you! And do the exercises that Melissa set’s out. Do what you can, monitor your bod and if you need to move onto something that works for you just do it and don’t feel guilty! Lis, didn’t now I missed a mini metcon this AM? I thought that I was just to row or something to get some cardio in? Anyway the skiing worked
)
January 27th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Ah, the mini-metcon was a delicious 1000m race on the rowers. Greg and Kirk almost killed themselves.
I think the skiing was a more-than-suitable sub!
January 27th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Excellent!
January 27th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
The intro rock climbing session will last a few hours (it’s mostly a safty/basics session) and will be a late morning/early afternoon kind of thing. If we get a large enough group, we’ll have the place all to ourselves with 2 people from their staff working with us (12 people will also keep the price at $35 Any fewer and it’ll probably be more). I’d like to propose Sunday, the 8th, as it seems like people have commitments that Saturday. If I don’t get back to the owner within a day or so, we won’t be able to book the 8th, so I need to know who can make it ASAP please.
From what I see so far, the list stands at:
Chris
Becky
Tracey
Who’s in?
